Gooeys, The (Calgary, AB) The Gooeys employ choice song writing with actual, honest-to-god surprises, somehow breathing new life into the form in the process. When is the last time you were surprised by a rock and roll band? True believers, get on board now. www.myspace.com/thegooeys

Muffs, The (Los Angeles, CA) The Muffs are a group of seasoned punk rockers that are ready and willing to sonically annihilate your ears. With a Green Day-like sound and a female lead vocalist, The Muffs have found themselves a steady following of punk rock fans since the early ‘90s. www.the-muffs.com

Hunx and his Punx (Oakland, CA) If you have never heard about Hunx and his Punx, based out of Oakland, CA, the first exposure you will likely have to them will be the video for “You Don’t Like Rock N Roll”. Unabashedly camp, the video features Hunx (nee Seth Bogart) laying in bed with his lover, who, when turned to to decide what kind of music they should listen to, offers up traditionally gay picks, like Lisa Minnelli. Hunx, however, has something else in mind and with a sly, knowing grin, offers up his own album cover, a take on the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers — though, in lieu of Andy Warhol’s lover’s leather-clad crotch, Bogart’s is featured clad in a fabulous zebra print.
The rest of the video, and, indeed, the entirety of Hunx and his Punx’s performance beyond, plays like a deranged dream set in the middle of a grotesque Bakhtinian carnival. All SoCal jangle rock and corpulent band members (his Punkettes), Hunx and his Punx update ‘70s glitter/glam rock for a brave new world. Where David Bowie reveled in the question of androgyny, playing in the space of “Is he? Or isn’t he?”, the self-described hunk leaves almost nothing to the imagination. The only question is whether or not you want to have fun tonight. Just don’t fall in love: you’re much to young to have your heart broken. http://www.hardlyart.com/hunxandhispunx.html
