Discoveries of the Day! Keep on Jumpin’ Around!

Faux Fur (Calgary, AB) It is incredible that the two Faux Fur members are so young. They play indie pop that sounds so rickety and ramshackle that their own souls must be falling apart. One of the two bands starting off the festival on Wednesday June 23. Check them out before they crumble in the rumble. www.myspace.com/fauxfurfakefur

Teen Daze (Vancouver, BC) You know when you are an adult and you see groups of teenagers hanging out at the mall, or whatever, and you think, “You have no idea how beautiful you are right now and how many possibilities are open to you at this very moment”? Yeah, this band sounds kind of like that. Playing more shows than anyone else at Sled Island 2011! Make sure you check this out! teendaze.tumblr.com

Twin Shadow (Brooklyn, NY) Twin Shadow just got back from an incredibly successful stint on with Jimmy Fallon, where they were crowned one of the best TV performances by a buzz band yet. Their featured song, “Castles in the Snow” won America over with its ridiculously slick, cool stylings that seem both effortless and totally unachievable by the rest of the living, breathing, population.

Dominican-born George Lewis Jr. borrows liberally and obviously from 1980s new wave, with a pining, yearning voice like Morrissey. But he still manages to make it his own, half fashion performance, half indie darling, half new wave revival brilliance — all of which sounds about as easy to put together as three halves into a whole. Regardless of the winning formula, it is hard not to earnestly agree with every word that drips from Lewis’ lips, who shape-shifts behind the mic from a less hyperactive Prince to a grimacing and twisting Hendrix playing a Rickenbacker. Twin Shadow proves that you can have it all, style and substance. All the cool kids will want to be at this show to take notes. twinshadow.net
