THE LOCAL DISH #3: WOMEN
Who-they Tuesdays returns on, er, Thursday…our bad! Consider this week’s update akin to one of those tucked away restaurants in which it takes a solid two hours to even get the waiter or waitresses’ attention…but the thing is, once the food arrives you forget the long delays because it’s just so scrumptious.
Women are putting Calgary on the global map. They are a band of four twenty-something dudes with an incredible sense for creating psychedelic pop music along with their label mate Chad VanGaalen who helped record their debut self-titled record. Since it’s release on local label/love affair Flemish Eye last summer the band has gone on to sign with the US-based independent record label Jagjaguwar which is home to several other talented canadian acts such as Julie Doirion, Ladyhawk and Black Mountain. It’s hard to believe, but in the past year Women will have played to over 180 crowds across North America and Europe opening up for bands like Dungen, Abe Vigoda, Crystal Stilts, King Khan & The Shrines and Eric’s Trip. Their record is now available in Canada (obviously!), US, UK, Europe and Japan. Did I mention these guys are from Calgary? There’s even a tie-in to our festival curator Colin Newman who saw Women play in London last year and instantly connected the band to the possibilities of emerging music from Calgary making an impact on the world front!
Yes, their band name may be nearly impossibly to search on google, but they have been gaining momentum all over the world and we’re proud to have Women back in Calgary to play at Sled Island in 2009…
